A catalyst for urban regeneration
The vision was to turn a badly damaged and derelict Grade II Listed mill in the centre of Bradford, into 38 self contained flats and an 11 unit hostel for North British Housing Association.
Our job, as Lead Consultants was to turn this into reality.
Careful planning and management were required to undertake this major operation in a congested area of town, which involved several road closures.
We also had to be sensitive to the building's status; working closely with the Local Authority and English Heritage to design a sympathetic refurbishment, and obtain the appropriate consents.
The project was divided into two phases.
Having been extensively damaged by fire, the first task was to stabilise the building by erecting a structural scaffold to support the ornate stone faced facades. Only when the internal structure had been completely stripped out, could we fully survey the shell of the building and carry out the necessary repairs.
Phase II involved the construction of cast in-situ concrete floors on load bearing masonry and creation of an additional floor within the new mansard roof structure.
Self contained residential accommodation was provided on all five floors, with a central atrium topped with a fully glazed roof to allow natural light to flood into the centre of the building.
The finished result brought a new lease of life to a neglected part of town.
